Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
What is UFE?
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) also sometimes called uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids without surgery.
Fibroids are common benign tumors of the uterus that can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, pressure symptoms, and anemia.
Who May Benefit?
UFE may be an option for patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids who experience:
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pain or pressure symptoms
- Bulk symptoms (urinary frequency, constipation)
- Anemia related to fibroids
- Desire to avoid hysterectomy or surgery
How does it work?
During UFE, a small catheter is advanced into the uterine arteries and tiny particles are used to block the blood flow to the fibroids.
This causes the fibroids to shrink over time, improving symptoms.

Benefits
- Minimally invasive (no surgery)
- Short recovery time
- Uterus is preserved
- Effective relief of symptoms for many patients
For Referring Physicians
UFE may be considered for patients with symptomatic fibroids who:
- Are not ideal surgical candidates
- Prefer to avoid hysterectomy or myomectomy
- Have persistent symptoms despite medical therapy
